Octacilio F. Netto, MD, Board of Directors.
Octacilio Figueirdo Netto, M.D., is Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Londrina State University in Londrina/PR, Brazil. He comes from a family of physicians; his father Octacilio Sr. is a prominent Gynecologic Surgeon in Brazil, and both his brother Eduardo and his sister Priscila are also gynecologists. He received his medical degree from Londrina State University in 1989, and was a resident at the Santa Casa de So Paulo School of Medicine from 1990-1992. Following residency, Dr. Figueirdo Netto went to Europe to study Infertility at the University of London/Hammersmith Hospital, under the supervision of Professor Robert Winston, one of the leaders in the field. He then spent the year of 1994 in Paris, France learning hysteroscopy and laparoscopy with Jacques Hamou at the Antoine Boclre Hospital, where he also became interested in Vaginal and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery.
Back in Brazil, he and his father Octacilio Sr. pioneered the use of vaginal hysterectomy in the absence of uterine prolapse in their country. In 1995, they both attended the International Vaginal and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery Conference in St. Louis for the first time, a meeting they have been coming back every year, either as participants to learn new surgical developments, and more recently as invited faculty to share some of their knowledge.
In 1996, Dr. Figueirdo Netto was a postgraduate fellow with Professor S. Robert Kovac, with whom he learned the newest concepts and modern procedures for repair of pelvic floor defects. After this, he and his father decided to organize their International Vaginal Surgery Course, a successful meeting with live surgeries held twice a year in Londrina, which is currently in its 15th edition. This event has been of significant value in helping more than 1,500 brazilian and foreign gynecologists develop their surgical skills through the vaginal approach, with the presence of worldwide authorities on the subject.
In 2003, Dr. Figueirdo Netto received his doctorate degree (equivalent to a PhD in the US), having performed an in-depth study on the surgical treatment of vaginal vault prolapse. He is also the author of numerous scientific articles on vaginal hysterectomy, transvaginal morcellation, laparoscopy at hysterectomy, stress urinary incontinence, sacrospinous colpopexy using the needle holder, pelvic organ prolapse and many others. He has spoken at various prestigious national and international meetings, often being asked to perform demonstrative live surgical procedures.
Dr. Figueirdo Netto and his father recently published their first textbook, entitled Histerectomia Vaginal Novas Perspectivas (Vaginal Hysterectomy New Perspectives). The great success and receptivity of the book prompted them to publish the 2nd edition in 2004, which includes two CD-ROMs with more than 3 hours of videos illustrating 35 operative procedures, aimed at improving the learning process.
