Carl W. Zimmerman, MD is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. He also holds the title of Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Meharry Medical College in Nashville. He is married to Janice B. Zimmerman and has two sons. Dr. Zimmerman received his BS degree from George Peabody College in Nashville in 1969 and his MD degree from the University of Tennessee Medical Units in Memphis, Tennessee in 1972. He was a resident physician in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center from 1972-1976. Dr. Zimmerman was in private practice in Nashville from 1976 - 2003. He served as Managing Partner of Nashville Ob-Gyn Associates through 2003. Since 1976, Dr. Zimmerman has been actively involved with resident education at Vanderbilt. He has held the titles of Clinical Instructor, Associate Clinical Professor, and Clinical Professor and was promoted to Professor on January 1, 2004. Currently, he staffs a Pelvic Floor Surgical Referral Clinic and is Associate Residency Program Director for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Zimmerman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1977) and Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1977). In 2000, he was elected to membership of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons. He has been an active member of the Society of Pelvic Reconstructive Surgeons since 1996 (Executive Board, 1999-present; President, 2003-present). Other memberships include the American Medical Association, Tennessee Medical Association, Nashville Academy of Medicine, Obstetrical & Gynecological Society of Nashville & Middle Tennessee (President 1994), and the Lonnie S. Burnett Vanderbilt Ob-Gyn Society (President 2001-2003). He served as Chief of the Obstetrics and Gynecology staff at Baptist Hospital from 1996-1998. Dr. Zimmerman founded and has been Course Director for each of the annual Issues in Pelvic Surgery conferences in Nashville from 1993 to the present. Dr. Zimmerman is author of a chapter on pelvic reconstructive surgery in the 9th edition of Te Linde’s Operative Gynecology (2003). Currently, he is co-editing a textbook entitled Vaginal Surgery. He has spoken at numerous meetings throughout the country and abroad. He has developed several surgical instruments and techniques that are used in vaginal and site-specific pelvic reconstructive surgery.
